The Church offers prayer and anointing with the Oil of the Sick to support those who are ill, symbolizing God's healing presence during times of physical and emotional hardship. Rooted in James 5:14–16, the tradition calls for the sick to be brought to a priest for prayer and anointing. Inspired by Jesus’ care for both the physical and spiritual well-being of the sick, the Church created this sacrament to offer comfort, strength, and hope.
Through the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, individuals receive grace, inner peace, courage, and strength from the Holy Spirit, helping them face anxiety, suffering, and temptation. The oil used—distinct from Chrism—represents the Holy Spirit’s blessing and signifies the sick person’s unity with the Church and the Communion of Saints.
